About this tool

Purview Label Analyzer compares the Microsoft Purview sensitivity label on a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file with the labels on the Office objects embedded inside it. An embedded workbook or presentation carries its own label, and when those disagree with the parent document the mismatch is invisible in Office.

When to use it

Reach for it when a document is unexpectedly blocked from being shared or emailed, when a file marked Public refuses to reach an external recipient, or when you paste charts and workbooks between documents of different classifications and want to check what travelled with them.

How to use it

1. Open a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file — the tool only reads it and produces no download.
2. Check the document label at the top, including its label ID and how it was applied.
3. Review the embedded objects table, where each one is marked as matching, mismatching, or not readable.

Good to know

• Labels are read from the file itself, so the tool reports the label identifier stored in the document — it cannot look up your organisation's label names or policies.
• An embedded object that is encrypted or stored in a legacy binary format cannot have its label read, and is reported as not readable rather than guessed at.
• A parent file whose own label applies encryption cannot be opened by any browser tool, so there is nothing to compare.

Common questions

Why does a mismatch matter?

Data-loss-prevention rules act on labels. A document marked Public that contains a workbook labelled Confidential can be stopped on its way to an external recipient, and the reason is rarely obvious from inside Office.

Can it change or remove a label?

No — this tool is read-only by design. If you want to strip a label from a document, the Document Inspector can remove it as part of writing a cleaned copy.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It is read entirely in your browser, nothing is changed, no download is produced and nothing is sent to a server.
