About this tool

Office File Analyzer opens the OpenXML package behind a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file and checks that it is structurally sound: every part is well-formed XML, every part has a declared content type, and every relationship points at something that exists. Each problem it reports comes with a plain explanation and the exact location.

When to use it

Use it when Office says a file is corrupt and offers to repair it, when a document behaves oddly after being generated by a script or a reporting tool, or when you want to know why a file will not open before you decide whether it is worth rescuing.

How to use it

1. Open a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file — the tool only reads it and produces no download.
2. Read the summary: either a clean bill of health, or a list of errors and warnings.
3. Expand any issue for what it means, the technical detail, and which part or relationship is at fault.

Good to know

• This is a structural and integrity check, not full ISO/ECMA schema validation — a package can be structurally perfect and still break a rule of the specification.
• An optional deeper analysis does run real schema validation, but it is the one feature that sends your file to our server; it only happens when you start it deliberately, and the file is never stored.
• Encrypted files, including those protected by a password or a Microsoft Purview label, cannot be inspected at all — there is nothing readable to check.

Common questions

Can it repair a broken file?

No, by design. It tells you precisely what is wrong and where, which is usually what you need to fix the generator that produced the file, or to decide that recovering the text is the realistic option.

Office repaired my file — why does this say it is fine?

Office repairs many things silently, and its complaint can come from a schema rule rather than a broken package. If the structure checks out, try the deeper analysis, which validates against the actual schema.

Is my file uploaded?

Not for the standard analysis — that happens entirely in your browser. Only the optional deeper analysis uploads, and only when you click it.
